Through this spring and summer, you’ll notice
hydrants open for extended periods of time as we begin our flushing
program.
Opening the hydrant draws water through the main at a faster than usual
speed, allowing any sediment to be flushed away. The sediment is lime
(used to reduce corrosion) and corrosion products associated with pipe
(such as iron). The water is often discolored after flushing, but will
settle out within an hour or so, and is always safe to drink. We will
attempt to schedule flushing in a manner that minimizes customer
disruptions, but some customers may experience reduced water pressure. |
