Our most successful endeavor is our Open House held every year in
conjunction with National Drinking Water Week. We invite area schools to
tour our facilities. In 2008, BWD hosted its eighteenth annual Open
House, attended by 250 students. Tours were held of our treatment
facility and pumping station at Floods Pond. Tents were set up with BWD
employees educating attendees on various topics including watershed
protection, water quality testing, the water cycle and backflow prevention.
American Forest Management had a display on forest management in the Floods
Pond watershed and the University of Maine showed the insects and fish
found in Floods
Pond. This was an ideal setting to show the water supply in its pristine
state and to educate students on what the District does to ensure safe
drinking water, and to keep it pollution free.
