Treatment of the District's Drinking Water

No Filtration

BWD has an exemption from filtration from the EPA due to its exceptionally high water quality. Only 11 surface water supplies in Maine do not have to filter their water.

Ozone

At the Butler Ozone Treatment Plant, ozone is bubbled into the water. It is our primary disinfectant used to destroy microorganisms.

Fluoride

The city of Bangor voted in 1967 to add fluoride to the water. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay.

Chloramines

Ammonia and chlorine are combined at our treatment facility to make chloramines. Chloramines provide a disinfectant residual in the distribution system.

Soda Ash

To help prevent corrosion of pipes and household plumbing, the District adds soda ash to minimize the water’s corrosiveness by reducing its acidity and raising the pH. Soda ash also increases the alkalinity of the water which helps stabilize the pH throughout the distribution system.

Because of Floods Pond's high quality, these are the only treatment processes required to ensure safe water at the tap.
